She retired from the single tour in 1994, only to return. Martina announced that the 2006 Wimbledon would be her last, and by no later than the end of the 2006 season she would retire from doubles play. On July 6, 2006, Marrtina Navratilova played her last ever match at Wimbledon after her loss in the mixed doubles against Israel's Andy Ram and Russia's Vera Zvonareva in the third round of the mixed event. Earlier on the same day Martina had lost her women's doubles quarter final match against Chinese fourth seeds Zi Yan and Jie Zheng, who then went on to win the title.
Wimbledon runner up Rafael Nadal returned to his home town following his defeat in Sunday’s final at the All England club. Unfortunately the car he was travelling in, hit an electricity pylon, in Manacor, Mallorca, Spanish media reported on Tuesday. The accident then blacked out part of the Island’s electricity supply. Fortunately he was unhurt.
Men's Singles Final at Wimbledon 2006 Championship Anticipation was high as the top seed and world ranked no 1 Roger Federer stepped onto Wimbledon’s centre court this afternoon. His 20-year-old Spanish opponent Rafael Nadal has shown his ability to translate his excellent clay court tennis play onto the grass surface through th e current championship.
Today at 2pm Wimbledon's All England club hosts its 2006 Ladies Singles Championship final. This year's final is between two of the most versatile and able women Tennis players. Whoever wins will add a second Grand Slam title to their current tally.

The centre court crowd excitedly applauded Rafael Nadal and Marcos Baghdatis as they stepped onto the centre court for their semi-final match at the All England club this afternoon. Eager for a close match, unfortunately it started just as the previous match had done. World number 1 and top seed at Wimbledon 2006 Roger Federer literally mowed the grass with Jonas Bjorkman in Todays semi-final match. John McEnroe has called it “David versus Goliath”. In a masterclass all of his own, Federer served up a succession of Aces and a frequent display of fabulous passing shots in a staggering 6-2 6-1 6-1 defeat of the 34 year old Swede. In a quick fire first set Federer had barely got going and 27 minutes later was one set in the lead. Wimbledon 2006. Justine Henin-Hardenne, the number 3 seed, has become the first player through to the Ladies Singles Finals at the All England club. She had a tough battle against her fellow compatriot, Kim Clijsters, the number two seed. Kim started the match strongly. With good solid deep ground strokes preventing Justine from adapting a favoured net position. She served solidly, but the flair from Justine and the versatility of the variety of excellent strokes was enough for her to comeback from an early break down and take the first set by six games to four. |
